eternal sunshine of the spotless mind

How happy is the blameless Vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd.

Alexander Pope, "Eloisa to Abelard"
A man awakens disheveled....on impulse he skips work and jumps on a train to mantauk....he meets a woman clementine.....they have a history..but neither remembers...but despite the fact they've had their memories erased each has a sensation of deja vu...can u really forget something thts that important to u?...or does it leave its imprint on ur mind, an imprint so deep that it can never be really and truly forgotten....
would u really want to forget...?
its ironic (i know ironic is not very apt here but im using the word ironic for want of a better word) that Mary a 20 something secretary quotes these lines to a 60 something man (Howard) not knowing that they were in a relationship, an affair.....the fact that these lines were taken from alexander popes eloise to abelard gives a subtle hint of the revelation made (their affair).....
the story behind eloise and abelard......
heloise(eloise) was a young girl of eighteen when she met abelard then 51...her uncle had bestowed upon abelard the task of tutoring eloise. From the moment they met they loved each other.Abelard had dedicated his life to the church and had taken a vow of celibacy.on discovering that eloise was pregnant with abelards child eloise's uncle had 2 of his servants castrate abelard. They were never to see each other again.eloise became a nun while abelard lost his position at the church.in a series of letters written by eloise to abelard she talks of her inner battle, trying to choose between her love for a man and her love for god.she envies those around her who have dedicated their lives out of choice and not force to the church and to god.she says
How happy is the blameless Vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd
